Must-Visit Experiences in the Florida Keys
Let’s talk about the Florida Keys!
As a Floridian, who only briefly spent time in North Carolina (18 months), I know more than the average person about our great state. One of my favorite things to do is visit Key West, which is just a 7 hour drive away. It really does pass quickly when you have great travel companions, fun music and a beautiful scene to look at all around. There is a ferry that’ll take you to Key West quicker, but if you have the time, a drive down there will be worth your while.
Depending on when you leave, where from and what you plan on doing, sleeping arrangements may be necessary, but it’ll only add another day or so to your trip that I very much recommend. You won’t want to just drive straight down and miss all of these opportunities for new experiences! Here are my picks for must-see experiences in the Florida Keys:
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
Coral reefs are a sight to see, and an experience you’ll likely never forget. At this state park, lounge on the land or snorkel in the sea. Explore coral reefs, sea life and mangrove swamps. As the country’s first undersea park, it’s 70 nautical square miles, an impressive expanse. All of your favorite water activities are available here.
Shake ‘N Bait Fishing Charters
On your drive down, you are surrounded by water and it’s so beautiful that you wish you could just pull the car right over and get up close and personal. Well, you can with the Shake ‘N Bait Charters, located in beautiful Islamorada. Islamorada is already a favorite stop of mine because it’s here that you can find bright colors everywhere you turn. The businesses here adorn their shops with colorful patio chairs and lawn ornaments that are quirky and fun. It’s definitely the laid back atmosphere you are going for when traveling in the Florida Keys.
Shake ‘N Bait will provide an amazing fishing experience to remember on a 44’ fishing boat that holds plenty while still giving you tons of space. You can book half, 3/4 and full day charters, as well as a swordfish fishing charter. If you’ve yet to see swordfish in their native habitat, it’s time. Trust me. Captain Jack Falcucci has been dishing the waters since 1980 and it shows. Plus, they have a top speed of 40mph and a cruising speed of 32 so not only is it family-friendly, but you can still relax and enjoy the company you keep without having to shout to be heard.
Dolphin Research Center
If you’re a nature lover, or if you just love to see these majestic sea animals cruise through the waters, the Dolphin Research Center located on Grassy Key is the right spot to stop on your way down to Key West. Providing sanctuary and a forever home to our favorite marine mammals since 1984, you can swim with dolphins and watch dolphin shows here.
Island Fish Co.
Located in Marathon, FL, Island Fish Company is one of those restaurants that is actually an experience. With more than 2,200 Google reviews and still sitting pretty at over 4 stars, this Florida Keys staple is a fan favorite. First, it’s waterside which is always a plus. Enjoy the tiki bar and indulge in your favorite frozen drinks while scarfing down my favorite — coconut shrimp.
My comprehensive list doesn’t even end here. There is literally an endless amount of options as you make your way to the southernmost point of the state. Try not to let any of these opportunities pass you by!
