holiday ham

I get down on holidays. And by that I mean that I get down on the food for holidays. I don’t care about the gifts or the shopping season. I don’t care much about the lights or holiday music. I simply care about this: that everyone who comes over to my house enjoys a home cooked meal.

In my family, you’d think we are feeding a small army. I mean, I have family (I’m looking at you, mom) who come over with to-go containers because they know there is an abundance of food and no one wants to see it go to waste.

Everyone contributes to the meal in some way, whether they are bringing cookies or a side dish, or even something easy for snacking. Because not a moment goes by when there isn’t some kind of food set out to enjoy.

Okay, so we’ve covered that there is a lot of food at my family gatherings. And this year, I’ll have two little kiddos running around. I’ve been working on my meal prep and planning game over the last several months and when I do it, it makes a world of difference. I actually can’t imagine the holidays without some prep.

And can we talk about the merry-g0-round that is storing food in the fridge and then cooking it in the oven, swapping out dishes and using up all of your pot holders because of the circus that is holidays at your home.

FoodSaver FM5200

This year, I’m so happy to be using the FoodSaver®  FM5200 Vacuum Sealing System and the FoodSaver® 11” x 16” Vacuum Seal Roll, 2 Pack, which you can purchase at Walmart in the home section food storage aisle, along with a bunch of your other holiday decor and food. As the #1 vacuum sealing solution in the US, the benefit to me is:

  1. I can keep my protein frozen in the bag until it’s time to start the cooking process. FoodSaver® keeps food fresh up to 5x longer (compared to ordinary storage methods) and helps prevent freezer burn. You know those sales at the grocery store on hams and turkeys? Grab them when the going is good, even if it’s months before the holiday. With the FoodSaver® FM5200, you don’t have to worry about it going bad.
  2. If I don’t have the need to freeze my meat, and instead can just jump to the marinating part of the process, the FoodSaver® FM5200 allows me to vacuum seal the meat with the marinade and only marinate for minutes instead of hours. This is ideal for batch cooking and meal planning because doing any part of my cooking ahead saves me so much time and makes getting dinner on the table much easier.

Yes, this is the FoodSaver® as seen on TV and you may be thinking, But Jen, do I really need another appliance in my kitchen? Is it worth the investment?

My answer: Yes! Yes and yes and yes. You do and it is. The FoodSaver® FM5200 is an investment. It’ll save you time and help you to produce less waste. Let’s face it, we’ve all been in the embarrassing position of allowing our food to go to waste in our fridge, or having to throw away freezer food because freezer burn has developed. Imagine using every bit of your groceries and not even seeing a difference in flavor. Also, it helps to cook your meat evenly throughout.

How it works: the multi-layer, BPA-free vacuum-seal bags are flexible so the food is surrounded effectively and sealed without any gaps. Long-term freezer storage is optimal because the air is completely blocked out.

  1. Insert vacuum seal rolls.
  2. Create bottom seal.
  3. Place whatever it is you want to vacuum seal into the bag.
  4. Seal up the bag with the FoodSaver® FM5200.

It doesn’t get any easier, right?

If you get the FoodSaver® system, it includes vacuum seal bags and rolls, vacuum zipper bags and containers designed to work together with vacuum sealers for optimal performance.

The setup is simple, the method is easy, the difference is huge.

I was able to make this honey and brown sugar glazed ham (with sriracha!!) in no time flat.
