Staple decor pieces that every home should have

Time for some real talk. Who here has made it a habit to not decorate your home, even without realizing it? Are you living in bare bones, with no signs of personality? I’m guilty of it too. For so long my husband and I never decorated where we lived. We wanted to save all of our money for our first home purchase, plus we personally didn’t see the point in decorating what we knew to be a temporary home. What if we found our forever home only to realize that the items we bought just don’t go?

Of course, now that we have our home, in hindsight we should have just serged forward with decorating because now I see that I could have had staple pieces to bring into this home, but that’s okay! Now I get to decorate from scratch!

I would say that a fair amount of my time lately has been spent looking online for home inspiration and foregoing the park with the kids in the name of shopping for our house instead (what? they have a great time! haha)

Anyway, there are certain things I need to do to this home, those staple pieces that can bring our style into the place we live. Ottomanson has some great items that any home could benefit from, including furniture, mats, tablecloths, etc.

First, pictures. We were so used to having no pictures around the house that it didn’t even occur to me to do anything differently. We have had family photos taken before, but where are they? Right on my computer, where they have been since the photographer sent them to me. Time to do something about that!

I’m going to get our favorite photos printed out, framed nicely, and hung in our entry room. I love the idea of having our family on display, more for ourselves than anyone else.

Then, time for some rugs. We were looking for a house with an open floor plan and I love that we found one, but for someone who never previously owned any rugs, we definitely needed something to break up our space a little, plus provide some relief on our feet since we have tile all throughout our house.

Ottomanson has both area rugs and runners, both of which I can use. We have many an area that will be livened up by a rug and given that I am in the kitchen so much, cooking dinner nearly every night, always on my feet, I’ve been eyeing a runner for the space between my island and the stovetop/oven area of the kitchen.

Rugs are also that staple piece that can tie a room together and really complete the look. The difference in colors and shapes and patterns means you can bring your personality into this home decor item too. Getting my rug from Ottomanson, I know it’s going to be quality. They are one of the leading wholesalers of area rugs in the United States, with both function and fashion in mind so you get a rug that looks great and is the high-quality piece you want in your home.

Next up: Plants!

I have never had a green thumb, but my husband sure does. I’ll leave him to taking care of the plants. I just want them in my house. I love the look of the fiddle leaf fig tree so much and I know exactly where I’d want them to go. I’ve also heard what benefits having real plants in your home can bring you.

They have been shown to improve mood, productivity, concentration, and creativity. Since I work at home, I can definitely use an uptick in all of these. They also reduce stress and bring a natural reduction in indoor toxins.

I’ll also take some fresh flowers!

Finally, I want to add curtains. Yeah, we don’t have curtains either (at this point, you probably aren’t surprised). In fact, we don’t even have matching blinds throughout our home. The previous homeowners just kind of piecemealed the blinds so that’s on my list too. Again, this is another home decor item that is going to make such a huge difference between a house and a home.

Obviously, you can get different curtains for each room of the house, depending on the vibe you’re going for. Since my husband works the overnight shift at the hospital, I know we will be getting some blackout window coverings so he can sleep well during the day. As for the main room of the house, I’m thinking of getting sheer curtains so we are still letting in a lot of light and they give an airy quality to the room.

We just purchased this home last year, but the idea of renovating and then decorating in our style is so exciting! What staple pieces have you incorporated into your home?
