Spinach Dip in a Pumpernickel Bowl for #SundaySupper
For any get together with family or friends, I always offer to bring something to share. We’ve gotten to the point where I no longer ask what I can bring because the answer is always the same: Spinach Dip. This super simple spinach dip recipe was probably found in a book many years ago by my mom, who I got the recipe from. I can imagine a cookbook with no pictures and yellowed pages (my favorite kind of cookbook sometimes), or maybe she acquired the recipe from the back of a package of food. Both of these are entirely possible, and maybe when reading this she can clarify.
The theme for #SundaySupper this week is April Showers, celebration showers that you would normally bring your dish to. Not only do I bring spinach dip for simple nights with girlfriends and our favorite wines, but I bring spinach dip to baby showers, bridal showers, celebrations for new jobs and promotions, and more. I’m asked for this recipe more than any other and I’m happy to pass it on. Once those same friends and family members make this Spinach Dip at another celebration they go to, they are then sought after for the recipe. Simplicity is sometimes the most important key. Enjoy.
Spinach Dip
Ingredients:
1 10 oz package of frozen chopped spinach
1 .4 oz package of dry Ranch dressing seasoning
8 oz jar of mayo
8 oz container of sour cream
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp onion powder
1 lb unsliced pumpernickel loaf (optional)
Sociable crackers (optional, but the best option- trust me)
Directions:
Defrost spinach and squeeze all water out. Combine spinach with all other ingredients.
And there you go, it’s that simple. The lemon juice and onion powder are just estimates and can be done to taste. (Unless baking, my family never uses exact measurements.) I serve my spinach dip in a pumpernickel bowl that comes unsliced from the bakery. I slice it in half, serve the dip in one half and tear apart the other half for dipping. Serve with my favorite crackers, Sociables, and you’re all set.

Oh, my. I had forgotten about this old favorite recipe!!! I first had it in nursing school decades ago and have loved it ever since. Perfect shower dip!!!!
I’m glad I could bring back some memories! 😉
Who doesn’t like spinach dip? I’m glad you didn’t use the packet of mix because our store is often out of it and then I get so mad because I want to make a spinach dip and don’t have the mix! This recipe will allow me to make it without the package, thank you!
Just to clarify, I ALWAYS have a packet of ranch around the house..I was talking about the actual spinach dip packet never being available in my store 🙂
Hahaha, I got you. I promise- this dip is so much better than any you’d find in the store!

How could it not be, right?? 😉

I love a good spinach dip! And in a bread bowl, even better. This is a great addition to any get-together.
I’ve tried the spinach dips that you find in the deli at the supermarket and have yet to find one I love as much as this recipe. The Sociable crackers and bread pair well!
Mmmmmmm, I’m a dip hoverer. People would have to fight me for a spot to get to this dip!
People fight over the bowl once the dip is gone, lol. My friends turn into animals for it.
Same Jen! 😆

Thank you, Bea!
I love the idea of serving the spinach dip in pumpernickel! It’s funny how now matter how many other fancy things we prepare spinach dip is the one everyone loves and requests!
People are so ravenous for this dish. I think being simple is so necessary sometimes.

YUM!! Pumpernickel is my favorite bread and it goes SO well with creamy dips 🙂
Agreed, agreed, agreed! I could really eat pumpernickel with almost anything.
My hubby loves spinach dip!! You can never go wrong with that. It would be gobbled down at any party!!
For sure! When I go to parties, people have started eating the bowl once the dip is gone.
Mmm! I could definitely go for some of that dip right about now. Sounds awesome!
🙂 I ate some for breakfast…hehe
NOM! This is always such a crowd pleaser. I didn’t realize how simple the recipe is…I will have to make it myself instead of buying it from Publix!
Definitely! I buy everything Publix brand except for the packet of ranch (Hidden Valley there) and it comes out great!
Spinach dip is so hard to resist and in my favorite type of bread too.
Mmm, who doesn’t love Pumpernickel, right??
This is one of my favorite items to bring to a party! LOVE the pumpernickel bowl.
Pumpernickel is one of my all-time favorite breads!!
I love this dip! Someone has brought it to our church potlucks before and it’s always devoured. Thanks for reminding me of this great and simple appetizer!
Thanks, Courtney! Maybe you can bring it to your next church potluck!
Oh yes, this is such a classic! But believe it or not, when I first met my husband, I had never heard of serving dip in pumpernickel bowls! It was something his mom made for parties, and when he told me about it, I thought it was C-R-A-Z-Y. But oh yeah, then I tried it. Not at all crazy 🙂
Only crazy when you eat all the dip and leave none for anyone else like I do. Oh wait…
There was a time when me and my friend would always order spinach dip with nachos whenever we went out. This recipe sounds amazing! Bridal and baby showers are very american, and are maybe starting to happen in the last few years here in argentina. We all got married or had kids at least 10 years ago, so all we did were bachelorette parties!
Really?? That’s so interesting that showers are American- I had no idea. Us crazy Americans, always coming up with something, lol.
You can always find me parked by the spinach dip. I usually see it in sourdough bowl but I like yours in pumpernickel. Yum!
Mmm, I’m sure sourdough is great too!
I ALWAYS attack the spinach dip at any party I go to. Yours looks delicious – so creamy and full of spinach (all that green means it’s healthy, right? 😉 Very cool putting it in a pumpernickel bowl instead of the ol’ sourdough.
Nancy, you and me both! It’s a wonder this dip makes it to the party at all…
Thank you for sharing your wonderful family recipe, Jennifer. It’s a keeper!
Thank you, so are your cupcakes!
Oh my, this takes me back! I haven’t had spinach dip in a pumpernickel bread in ages! It looks delicious and a great idea for a shower!
Camille, you clearly have to have spinach dip and pumpernickel again! 🙂
I love dip in bread bowls. I do a spinach dip version off the knorr veggie pack every Thanksgiving!
Oh interesting! I’d love to see what you do with it!
Looks wonderful. Perfect for a shower!
Thanks, Melanie!
Yes! Now I have the recipe for this. Yum I can’t wait to make it, since the last time I had it which I think was at Becca’s for the blogger get together
Oh yeah that’s right!! That was so long ago!!
What a creative serving idea, I love pumpernickel bread.
Love pumpernickel bread so much! 🙂
Ahh, I love a good (and simple Spinach dip). This one looks especially tasty. Also, I know all too well about those old cookbooks of our mothers’ time that are now torn, stained and have not a single picture! Love an old classic recipe.

I’ve had this so many times at a number of gatherings but never made it myself. It’s soooo delicious! One of my favourites for sure. I’ll have to make it next time we have company. Hope I don’t eat most of it myself. LOL
