Introducing Your Infant to the Pool

Introducing Your Infant to the Pool

Babies in pool

Living in Florida, there are two things your children get incredibly familiar with incredibly fast: the beach and the pool. But kids around bodies of water? That can be scary. It’s so important to us to have a healthy relationship with water so our kids are not afraid of it, can be safe around it, know the dangers associated with it so they are just more aware, and have a lot of fun!

The pool is one of the main ways we are able to pool off during these summer months when thermometers are reading over 100 degrees.

Max, being two, is exploring the pool’s slides and water spouts, wading deeper and deeper in the water (with us by his side, of course!) He doesn’t quite know how to swim yet, but it’s coming up very quickly! We’ll be teaching him how to swim in no time because we know it can be a real lifesaver. SwimWays is an industry leader in helping children learn to swim so we had one of their products for Max when he was a baby, and it helped to promote water safety with him.

As for Juliette, who is four months old, we now have the SwimWays Infant Baby Spring Float, an essential for our family pool days. I think us moms can agree that holding a four month old can require two hands nearly always (their heads just sometimes do what they want!), and just holding them during your fun family activities can get boring for them too. With the Infant Baby Spring Float with Sun Canopy, Juliette can have her own experience in the pool with the rest of us.

I love that Juliette (and me, for that matter!) doesn’t have to be confined to the shaded tables and chairs, away from everyone else having fun in the water. I love that I can still experience the water and be close to my other child as he splashes in the pool. I love that when Juliette is in the pool, she’s feeling the cool water from the little splashes and water filtering in the sides, but that this can be done under the shade to keep the sun exposure to a minimum. I love that she can be around the family to hear and see the delighted squeals from her big brother and know that the pool can be a safe and fun space.

On our most recent trip to the pool we invited some friends over with their little ones. Everyone is around the same age except for Juliette so while the other kids enjoyed the pool park, Juliette and I sat in the wading section. That’s the great thing about this float – as the parent, you don’t have to be all the way in. Believe it or not, because of daily rain and gray clouds we’ve been experiencing lately, the pool was a little cold!

I was thrilled to be able to not have to get all the way in, yet I could still make sure Juliette had an experience of her own. This float is really impressive because Juliette is comfortable and supported, making her first adventure in the swimming pool a positive one. The soft seat cradles the baby (it’s for infants who are 3-9 months old) and you can still strap them in with the 3-point harness. While we’re on the topic of safety, you should also know that additional features include dual inflation chambers, child safety valves, and a wide base with a spring so your child can experience maximum stability.

The canopy is adjustable and provides UPF 50+ sun protection, which is major since an infant under six months shouldn’t rock the sunblock just yet.

And, one other thing, the entire float with canopy folds flat and compact into the included carrying case. If you’re a parent, you know how much stuff you bring to any outing so if there’s a way to make our lugging of all the items a little easier, I’m all for it.

And can we just talk about how cute it was when Max was able to push his sissy around in the float. He was so proud to be a big brother and introduce Juliette to the water he now loves so much.
