Golden Rum Cake from Booze Cakes (Giveaway)

There are 2 things about myself that I’m now going to share with all of you:

1. I like booze, but I’m not a big drinker. I’m not really a big drinker of anything. I have to force myself to drink water.
2. I don’t even really like desserts all that much. (I have to be in the mood.)

Given these tidbits, you may wonder why I would be so pumped to receive a copy of Booze Cakes in the mail to review for my readers. Well, cakes made of booze are on a whole other level. To consume them doesn’t mean to drink tons of booze and it also adds an element to a dessert that I find to be absolutely wonderful.

When I first opened Booze Cakes, I immediately thought of all my friends who would appreciate this book. I have some booze hound friends, let me tell you. But then I thought…my readers would probably love this book too and so I’m hosting a giveaway. (See the end of this post for entries.)

Now, when it comes to reviewing cookbooks, I always select a recipe to share. I really feel that it’s only through trying a recipe that you can gauge just how accurate you can expect the recipes to be, both in presentation and taste. You can also see how easy the recipes are.

Fearing a trip to the grocery store during Christmas time, I chose to make the Golden Rum Cake, a cake whose ingredients didn’t require me to leave my house. I will say that there were a number of more appealing booze cake recipes, but I didn’t have some of the ingredients on hand, which would require me to brave the busy streets of Tampa, stand in line at the liquor or grocery store for an inordinate amount of time, and then come home with feelings of frustration and laziness, causing me to completely forgo the making of any cake.

I just couldn’t do that to myself, or you fine folks. And, the Golden Rum Cake turned out so great anyway, there was no question of what could have been.

This cake was a number of things: easy, delicious, moist. The glaze took this cake to a level only seen in my foodie dreams. It was wonderful out of the oven and even better the next day.

As for the book, it includes recipes for Classic Booze Cakes, Cocktail Cakes, Cake Shots, Cakes With a Twist (popular recipes spiked with alcohol), as well as tips and tricks for baking with alcohol, serving suggestions for parties, and a handy “booze meter” to track alcohol content for each recipe.

And, let me not forget the sections for Homemade Booze (recipes for flavored liqueurs and homemade mixers), and Homemade Treats (recipes for topppings, frostings, and fancy garnishes).

Ingredients
  • [b]Golden Rum Cake:[/b]
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup rum[br]
  • [b]Golden Rum Glaze[/b]
  • 4 tbsp (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark rum
Instructions
[b]Golden Rum Cake:[/b]
  1. Preheat oven to 350*F. Grease and flour a 9- or 10-inch Bundt or tube cake pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition.
  3. Combine flour, baking power, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, combine milk, vanilla, and rum.
  4. Beat flour mixture and milk mixture into batter in three alternating additions. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake 1 hour, or until golden brown.
[b] Golden Rum Glaze:[/b]
  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Stir in sugar and 1/4 cup water and bring to a boil; cook 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup rum.
  2. Place cake on a serving platter. Slowly pour glaze over top and sides until completely absorbed. Dust with confectioners’ sugar.

I think I may be a booze hound…but I am with you on the lack of a sweet tooth. However, I also appreciate liquor infused baked goods…particularly the rum cake. It reminds me of the Caribbean. Once again, beautiful photos. This recipe definitely seems like one that even this baking free female could pull off 🙂
