I’m very happy about all of the fruit based food holidays happening lately! 🙂 Today is both National Candied Orange Peel Day and National Orange Juice Day [4].
However, I normally cut my oranges in such a way so as to avoid as much of the pith and peel as possible. Sometimes I get a taste and it’s so bitter that I can’t even take it. To think of making something solely focused on the peel of an orange didn’t please me too much at first, but then I remembered the dried blood orange slices, peel and all, I had from a vendor at the International Food Bloggers Conference.
They also had lemon and lime slices and I really enjoyed all options. So then National Candied Orange Peel Day didn’t seem so bad after all.
It took me a little (read: long) bit of time to actually cut the peel away from the orange, but then through a mixture of sugar and water, candied orange peels were created in (almost) no time!
They may not be the prettiest snack. Actually, they are most definitely not the prettiest snack, but I ended up loving them as much as I hate non-candied orange peel. I think I’ll be doing this same thing with other citrus fruits!
